Domba Sanou

Domba’s mother is a Griot, his father comes from the Forgerons caste, making them an unusual combination. Parallel to his studies he was following courses and masterclasses in music and theatre. He learnt music from his brother from a young age, a real artist in blood and bones.

 Domba Sanou

In 1991 at the young age of 11 his destiny crosses with that of the celebrated director Amadou Bourou. He developed the project ‘Espace Enfants’, a theatre project for youngsters in Burkina Faso. Domba was noticed as being a promising artist.

Together with his brothers and sisters he founded the troupe ‘Yiribalili’ in 1998. This allowed him to develop his talents as a composer and a musician, especially the Kora, his favourite instrument.

From 2003 onward it is in the framework of his own group  Bâ Douwaou that he starts to evolve and continue his artistic collaborations.

The director of the choir ‘l’Abbé Johanny’ invited Domba to join his ensemble.

In 2006, it was the meeting with the Dutch saxophonist Dick De Graaf during the festival Jazz à Ouaga that allowed him to work with the famous Mailan musician Cheick Tidiane Seck and the Haitian musician Emeline Michelle in 2007.

Open for new work, he has travelled to Brasil and Europe for various work and has collaborated with musicians such as Bil Aka Kora, Alif Naaba, Sissao, the hip hop group D-Tenus.

His dynamic style and his knowledge of the Kora makes him a known musician, able to adapt the ancient Kora to universal accords.

Domba joined Faso Danse Theatre in 2008  he is part of production Babemba.
