I lost my English deals with cultural alienation, the intellectual dominion and the social and economic oppression that the language can contain.
Choreographers Kalpana Raghuraman and Serge Aimé Coulibaly know how it feels to be an ‘outsider’ – in foreign country, but also in their own country. This is a strong point of departure. Not just ‘outsider’ in the physical way but also in an ‘intellectual’ way. When the words you speak are not understood or ridiculed. When the way these words sound suddenly speak volumes about your history, your country and perhaps nothing about what those words mean in the dictionary. When the language you speak suddenly creates a hierarchy and brings up the economic, political and social power structures.
